Last night Fire/Rescue Co1 along with Fire Co’s 2, 4, Mahwah EMS, and Police responded to Route 287 for a rolled over tractor trailer. After arriving on scene emergency crews removed the driver who was then transferred to EMS for evaluation and transport to an area hospital. For this week’s drill Co1 firefighters practiced their skills with our high-pressure airbags. These are typically used to lift an object when used in conjunction with cribbing. Our task for the drill was to safely lift a shipping container from both ends, and then secure it with cribbing. This is an important skillset that requires coordination between different teams while using equipment that we do not get use that frequently. Think you would like to join us? Yesterday evening Mahwah Fire Companies 1, 2, 3, and 4, alongside firefighters from the surrounding area responded to Upper Saddle River for a fully involved house fire. Once on scene Company 1 firefighters established an initial water supply and then performed various tasks along the fire scene in support of the overall operation. This morning Co1’s airboat, Marine 1, responded to Wurtsboro, NY to assist another Fire Department who had gotten their airboat stuck deep inside of a marsh while searching for a missing kayaker earlier that morning. Thankfully, the lost kayaker was found and evacuated, though suffering from exposure. It took approximately five hours to get the stranded airboat free.

For tonight’s drill, Co1 Firefighters practiced their skills drafting and pumping to a tower ladder. This is a difficult task because of the higher pressure required to push the water up the aerial, and in the case of Ramsey’s Tower 441, there was no onboard pump to assist. While our pump operators were practicing this other firefighter learned how to use and operate the ladder. This weekend several new members of Co1’s Dive Team completed their Tender and also Contaminated Water training, both of which are essential training for all members of our dive team. This afternoon Fire Co’s 1 and 3 assisted the Township’s DPW with a road closure after a sudden and severe thunderstorm damaged a road and left it impassable.
For tonight’s drill, Co1 Firefighters practiced their skills setting up a fire hydrant and connecting it to the fire engine or as we call it “hitting the hydrant”.
