Training Weekend

This was a busy weekend for the volunteer firefighters of Company 1, with members completing multiple advanced training courses. Beginning Friday evening and continuing through Sunday, several of our firefighters braved extreme cold and frigid water to complete their Ice Rescue Technician Certification, taught by RPI. This specialized training provides our members with the skills and techniques necessary to safely rescue victims who have fallen through ice on frozen bodies of water. Simultaneously, additional firefighters completed bailout training at the Bergen County Fire Academy. This essential course teaches firefighters emergency self-rescue techniques to rapidly exit a burning structure when conditions deteriorate, often requiring escape through upper-story windows. We would like to congratulate and thank our dedicated members who sacrificed their weekend to obtain these advanced certifications. Their commitment to training ensures Company 1 remains prepared for the diverse technical rescue scenarios we face. Special thanks to the Bergen County Office […]

Ice Rescue Drill

For this week’s drill, members of Rescue Company 1 conducted ice rescue training. Firefighters rotated through scenarios as both victims and rescuers entering the frigid water practicing proper techniques for victim approach and extraction of victims who have fallen through the ice. This specialized training ensures our crews remain proficient with our ice rescue equipment and procedures during the winter months when these incidents occur. Thank you to our partners at Mahwah EMS for standing by on scene and providing rehab. We would like to remind all Township residents to exercise extreme caution around frozen bodies of water. Ice thickness can vary significantly and what appears safe may not support weight. Please stay off the ice on local ponds and waterways.

Elevator Rescue

Earlier tonight, Rescue Company 1 along with Fire Company 2 were dispatched to one of the local hotels for a reported elevator entrapment with multiple occupants. Upon arrival, crews located the elevator car stopped on the third level. Company 1 firefighters safely opened the elevator doors, allowing all trapped occupants to exit without injury. After ensuring everyone was safely out of the elevator, our new friends asked for a picture with us to remember the eventful night.

Confined Space Training

This past weekend Co.1 and Co.3 firefighters along with our colleagues from the area and around the state took part in an extensive confined space operations class taught by Rescue Products International. Firefighters received hands on training in confined Space entry and rescue along with regulations, rigging and hauling systems, air monitoring, and site management. The class included live evolutions with entry teams who donned SABA (supplied air breathing apparatus) then packaged and rescued ‘Rescue Randy’ from inside a 15’ storm drain basin, and down a 24’ drainage pipe. RPI and our firefighters will return next month for part 2 of the class for more extensive evolutions and receive their technician certification.

Playground Entrapment

Children are inquisitive beings… Sticking their limbs in all sorts of places. Sometimes, those limbs get stuck. Earlier today, firefighters from Rescue Co 1 and Co 4, along with Mahwah EMS and Police responded to just such a call when a small child got her leg stuck in the railings of a wooden jungle gym. After EMS assessed the patient, firefighters from Rescue 1 examined the trapped limb and determined how to free it. In this case, the tool of choice was a hydraulic Hurst spreader more commonly used to rescue victims trapped in cars after severe accidents. In short order, the girl’s leg was freed and she was safely turned over to her mother and school staff. Her reward for being so brave? Seeing the fire trucks and honking the air horns.
