Yesterday afternoon, Rescue Engine 117, Rescue 1, RS-1, along with Fire Companies 2 and 3 were dispatched to a local business for an activated fire alarm. Upon arrival, crews discovered the alarm activation was triggered by a leak from a Halon fire suppression system. Company 1 firefighters immediately began air monitoring operations and securing the affected area. Additional crews stood by while awaiting the arrival of a Halon system technician. Due to the potential hazards associated with Halon gas, firefighters maintained a safety perimeter and continued atmospheric monitoring throughout the incident. At the conclusion of operations, Air-3 responded to fill SCBA cylinders. All units operated on scene for approximately 2 hours before returning to quarters.

Jennings Creek Forest Fire

Last evening, firefighters from Rescue Company 1 and Fire Company 3 were dispatched as mutual aid to West Milford for the Jennings Creek Forest Fire. Led by Assistant Chief 150, members cross staffed Tanker 5 and responded as a water supply element. Our crew remained on scene overnight until they were released and returned to Mahwah early this morning.

Brush Fire

Friday afternoon, Fire Rescue Company 1 along with Fire Companies 2 & 3 responded to the Cragmere section of town for a reported brush fire threatening a structure. Upon arrival, Rescue Engine 117 with a full crew found an active brush fire in the side yard that had begun to extend to the residence. Engine 117’s crew stretched a handline and began extinguishing the fire. While 117’s crew worked on fire suppression, firefighters from Engines 115 and 320 conducted extensive overhaul operations to ensure no hot spots remained. Additional manpower from RS-1 and Engine 217 remained in staging to assist if needed.

287 Car Fire

Early Saturday morning Rescue Company 1 along with Fire Companies 2, 4, and EMS were dispatched to Route 287 South for a motor vehicle accident with entrapment and fire. While enroute, units were advised that all occupants were out of the vehicle. Upon arrival, Rescue 1’s crew assisted Co.2 with the initial handline and also stretched a backup line. Engine 117 supplied additional water and manpower. Units operated for about 2 hours before returning to quarters.

Ramsey House Fire

Last evening at approximately 9:45pm, Fire Rescue Co.1 was requested as mutual aid for an engine into Ramsey for a working house fire. Engine 115 responded and once on scene assisted with extinguishment and overhaul. During the incident, we were also requested to send an additional engine to standby at Ramsey Fire Headquarters. Engine 117 fulfilled this request and stood by with Waldwick’s Tower Ladder and Franklin Lakes engine. Job well done by the Ramsey FD who were faced with heavy fire conditions on arrival.

Annual Library Touch A Truck

On Tuesday evening the Mahwah Fire Dept. went to the Township Library for the annual touch a truck and story time as part of fire prevention month. At the end of the evening, Co.1’s very own Tommy Murphy hosted a firefighter themed story time for the children. This was another great community event that allowed us to spend time with our residents and showcase our equipment.

Marine-1 Responds to Orangeburg

Early this morning, Company 1 was requested mutual aid by the Orangeburg NY Fire Dept. who were on scene of a machinery fire in a large commercial building. Upon arrival of RS-1 with Marine-1, set up a mechanical ventilation operation using the large fan on the boat to help evacuate the heavy smoke condition from the building. Our crew operated for around an hour before returning to the Township. Job well done goes out to the Orangeburg NY FD & their Mutual Aid partners for a quick knock down.

287 Entrapment

This afternoon, Rescue 1, Rescue Engine 117, along with Fire Companies 2, 4, EMS, and PD responded to 287 South for an MVA with entrapment. Upon arrival Rescue 1’s crew using the jaws of life swiftly removed the passenger door extricating the patient and turned them over to EMS. All units returned to quarters within an hour.
