This week Co.1 Firefighters took delivery of a bunker gear dryer which will work in conjunction with last year’s purchase of a gear washer. These allow our firefighters to routinely wash their gear removing dirt and cancer causing particulates. This is a big step forward with helping keep our volunteers safe and healthy. Thank you to the Township and Dept. Chiefs for providing these valuable items.
Last evening at approximately 9:45pm, Fire Rescue Co.1 was requested as mutual aid for an engine into Ramsey for a working house fire. Engine 115 responded and once on scene assisted with extinguishment and overhaul. During the incident, we were also requested to send an additional engine to standby at Ramsey Fire Headquarters. Engine 117 fulfilled this request and stood by with Waldwick’s Tower Ladder and Franklin Lakes engine. Job well done by the Ramsey FD who were faced with heavy fire conditions on arrival.
On Tuesday evening the Mahwah Fire Dept. went to the Township Library for the annual touch a truck and story time as part of fire prevention month. At the end of the evening, Co.1’s very own Tommy Murphy hosted a firefighter themed story time for the children. This was another great community event that allowed us to spend time with our residents and showcase our equipment.

Early this morning, Company 1 was requested mutual aid by the Orangeburg NY Fire Dept. who were on scene of a machinery fire in a large commercial building. Upon arrival of RS-1 with Marine-1, set up a mechanical ventilation operation using the large fan on the boat to help evacuate the heavy smoke condition from the building. Our crew operated for around an hour before returning to the Township. Job well done goes out to the Orangeburg NY FD & their Mutual Aid partners for a quick knock down.

At around 3AM this morning, Rescue Engine 117, Rescue 1, Engine 217, and Air 3, Responded to a residence for a burning electrical odor. After investigating firefighters determined the source which was a USB hub.

For our weekly drill, Co.1 Firefighters continued to work on stretching and operating hose lines. In addition, our senior driver reviewed basic pump operations with some of our younger members as they start their journey to become qualified pump operators.

This afternoon, Rescue 1, Rescue Engine 117, along with Fire Companies 2, 4, EMS, and PD responded to 287 South for an MVA with entrapment. Upon arrival Rescue 1’s crew using the jaws of life swiftly removed the passenger door extricating the patient and turned them over to EMS. All units returned to quarters within an hour.
We are halfway through 2024 and the volunteer firefighters of Fire Rescue Co.1 have responded to 203 calls for service throughout the Township, our neighboring towns, and the region. In addition to responding to alarms, our membership has also kept busy with many hours of training at our weekly drills, monthly meetings, and attending community events. Yesterday was a busy day for the Volunteer Firefighters of Rescue Co.1 At around 1pm, Rescue 1 was requested Mutual Aid by Suffern FD to Good Samaritan Hospital Emergency Room to assist with removing a toy from a child’s tongue. Rescue 1 responded with a full crew and once on scene we utilized our Man vs. Machine kit alongside Suffern firefighters and ER doctors. After a short time, we were able to successfully remove the object from the child’s mouth. Later that evening Rescue 1, Rescue Engine 117, and Engine 115 responded to Avenue A for an MVA with entrapment. The patient who had been removed prior to our arrival was transported by Mahwah EMS to an area hospital.

This afternoon Fire Companies 1 & 2 responded to a carbon monoxide alarm at a residence on Franklin Turnpike. Crews from Engine 117 & Rescue 1 checked the home with meters while awaiting PSE&G. The source was determined to be a gas pressure washer that was being used very close to the home. After ventilating the structure, companies returned to quarters.
