busy start to the weekend

Last evening marked a busy start to the weekend for the volunteer firefighters of Rescue Company 1. At around 8pm Friday, Engine 117, Rescue 1, along with Companies 2 & 4 responded to a residence for a reported burning odor. Upon investigation, firefighters traced the source to the fireplace, which was used earlier. On Saturday, we were dispatched to one of the township hotels for an activated fire alarm. Engine 117, Rescue 1, & Engine 115 responded. Later in the day, the third call brought Engine 117, Rescue 1, and Engine 320 to a residence for an odor investigation. Upon arrival, crews located the source as a malfunctioning clothes dryer. Co.1 firefighters secured the appliance before returning. Between calls, our members took time to prepare apparatus and equipment for the forecasted winter storm. Upon arrival, Company 1 crews confirmed all patients were out of their vehicles before returning to quarters.

Community Events and Fires

This past weekend was exceptionally busy for the volunteer firefighters of Company 1. Friday evening, we concluded our annual Santa Present Delivery fundraiser and on Saturday, after escorting Santa through the Cragmere section of town, Companies 1 and 3 represented Mahwah at the Orangeburg Holiday Parade. On top of these community events, our volunteers have responded to 7 emergency calls since Friday evening ranging from gas leaks and fire alarms to providing mutual aid coverage in Tallman NY. The busy stretch continued into early Monday morning when Engine 115 responded mutual aid into Ramsey for a working structure fire, followed by calls for gas leaks and CO Alarms in our township. Job well done by our dedicated members who balanced both emergency response and community service throughout the weekend.

Halon Leak

Yesterday afternoon, Rescue Engine 117, Rescue 1, RS-1, along with Fire Companies 2 and 3 were dispatched to a local business for an activated fire alarm. Upon arrival, crews discovered the alarm activation was triggered by a leak from a Halon fire suppression system. Company 1 firefighters immediately began air monitoring operations and securing the affected area. Additional crews stood by while awaiting the arrival of a Halon system technician. Due to the potential hazards associated with Halon gas, firefighters maintained a safety perimeter and continued atmospheric monitoring throughout the incident. At the conclusion of operations, Air-3 responded to fill SCBA cylinders. All units operated on scene for approximately 2 hours before returning to quarters.
