The Mahwah Fire Department turns 105 this year. An even bigger Anniversary is the 75th Anniversary of the Township of Mahwah! The creation of the MFD had a significant impact in Northwest Bergen County. It began the formation of what would become the township. In the 1920’s the fire department built the first municipal building at 100 Miller Rd (today still in use as Mahwah Fire Co. 1). The ground floor was the fire department. The top floor the courtroom. The basement the police department and jail. With government infrastructure in place it took 30 years after the MFD but The Township of Ho Ho Kus became incorporated as the Township of Mahwah through an act of the NJ State Legislature after a vote in the municipal election on November 7, 1944. Last night at our weekly drill, Company 1 Firefighters practiced untangling and then putting on their SCBA’s while blindfolded. This helps to teach familiarization with all parts of the SCBA and it is also good practice if Firefighters need to perform this during a fire or somewhere with low visibility. Company 1 members spent today escorting Santa around the Cragmere section of town. Thank you to everyone who came out to meet and take pictures with Santa, we had a great turnout this year and are looking forward to seeing everyone again.
Starting at around 6:30 this morning Rescue 1 along with Fire Companies 2, 4, and EMS responded to 287 South for a car crash with an entrapped driver. After arriving on scene members Rescue found a car has crashed into the back of a tractor trailer. Rescue 1 worked for close to an hour to remove the driver from the car who was then transported to an area hospital. Later after the snow storm had started Fire Companies 1 and 3 responded to Masonicus Road for a car fire. After arriving on scene members Mahwah Fire found the car was fully involved in fire, the driver had already exited the vehicle. Fire Companies 1 and 3 then worked to extinguish the fire and ensure that it was out.

Company 1 members are always training, many times giving up part of their weekends to complete advanced training. This weekend company 1 members took part in an elevator rescue class where firefighters learned how to safely remove passengers from a disabled elevator.
