2024 calls for service

As 2025 begins, we would like to recognize the dedication and commitment shown by the volunteer firefighters of Company 1 throughout 2024. Our members responded to 436 calls for service both within Mahwah Township and surrounding communities. These emergencies ranged from technical rescue operations including vehicle extrications and dive team deployments to structure fires, vehicle fires, and numerous mutual aid requests to our neighboring departments. Beyond emergency response, Co.1 firefighters demonstrated their commitment to excellence by completing advanced training. Many members sacrificed their weekends to obtain advanced certifications including Firefighter 2, Rescue Technician, Confined Space Technician, and Man vs. Machine specializations. The dedication shown by our members, who balance their service with family and work commitments, continues to be the cornerstone of Company 1’s success in protecting our community. Stephens Lane Fire

Wednesday evening at approximately 9pm, Mahwah Fire Department responded to Stephens Lane for a reported structure fire with smoke and fire showing from the attic. Rescue Engine 117 was first arriving, immediately stretching a handline to the second floor. Rescue 1 arrived next and performed a primary search. Crews removed portions of the ceiling and discovered active fire conditions in the attic which were quickly knocked down by 117’s handline. Co1 and Co3 Firefighters entered the attic and found the fire originating from the furnace and had spread to surrounding areas. Firefighters continued to extinguish flames and started to overhaul the fire area. In addition to the firefighters working inside of the home, additional firefighters from Engine 115 worked to set up a water supply for Engine 117. busy start to the weekend

Last evening marked a busy start to the weekend for the volunteer firefighters of Rescue Company 1. At around 8pm Friday, Engine 117, Rescue 1, along with Companies 2 & 4 responded to a residence for a reported burning odor. Upon investigation, firefighters traced the source to the fireplace, which was used earlier. On Saturday, we were dispatched to one of the township hotels for an activated fire alarm. Engine 117, Rescue 1, & Engine 115 responded. Later in the day, the third call brought Engine 117, Rescue 1, and Engine 320 to a residence for an odor investigation. Upon arrival, crews located the source as a malfunctioning clothes dryer. Co.1 firefighters secured the appliance before returning. Between calls, our members took time to prepare apparatus and equipment for the forecasted winter storm. Community Events and Fires

This past weekend was exceptionally busy for the volunteer firefighters of Company 1. Friday evening, we concluded our annual Santa Present Delivery fundraiser and on Saturday, after escorting Santa through the Cragmere section of town, Companies 1 and 3 represented Mahwah at the Orangeburg Holiday Parade. On top of these community events, our volunteers have responded to 7 emergency calls since Friday evening ranging from gas leaks and fire alarms to providing mutual aid coverage in Tallman NY. The busy stretch continued into early Monday morning when Engine 115 responded mutual aid into Ramsey for a working structure fire, followed by calls for gas leaks and CO Alarms in our township. Job well done by our dedicated members who balanced both emergency response and community service throughout the weekend.

Jennings Creek Forest Fire

Last evening, firefighters from Rescue Company 1 and Fire Company 3 were dispatched as mutual aid to West Milford for the Jennings Creek Forest Fire. Led by Assistant Chief 150, members cross staffed Tanker 5 and responded as a water supply element. Our crew remained on scene overnight until they were released and returned to Mahwah early this morning.

Brush Fire

Friday afternoon, Fire Rescue Company 1 along with Fire Companies 2 & 3 responded to the Cragmere section of town for a reported brush fire threatening a structure. Upon arrival, Rescue Engine 117 with a full crew found an active brush fire in the side yard that had begun to extend to the residence. Engine 117’s crew stretched a handline and began extinguishing the fire. While 117’s crew worked on fire suppression, firefighters from Engines 115 and 320 conducted extensive overhaul operations to ensure no hot spots remained. Additional manpower from RS-1 and Engine 217 remained in staging to assist if needed.

287 Car Fire

Early Saturday morning Rescue Company 1 along with Fire Companies 2, 4, and EMS were dispatched to Route 287 South for a motor vehicle accident with entrapment and fire. While enroute, units were advised that all occupants were out of the vehicle. Upon arrival, Rescue 1’s crew assisted Co.2 with the initial handline and also stretched a backup line. Engine 117 supplied additional water and manpower. Units operated for about 2 hours before returning to quarters.

Stage 3 Fire Restrictions

Monday, Oct. 21: As of 6 a.m., the New Jersey Forest Fire Service has implemented statewide Stage 3 Fire Restrictions statewide in response to prolonged dry conditions and increased wildfire activity. STAGE 3 FIRE RESTRICTIONS All fires will be prohibited unless contained in an elevated stove using only propane, natural gas, gas, or electricity. No charcoal fires are allowed.
