Early this morning, Engine 115 with a full crew stood by to watch the 37 year history of the Sheraton Hotel come to an end. Demolition crews successfully imploded the 250 foot tall, 25 story hotel. Over the years, we have responded to countless incidents ranging from alarms, fires, elevator rescues, and cars off the parking garage. Extrication Drill With EMS

For this week’s (04/30/2025) drill Rescue Company 1 teamed up with Mahwah EMS for a joint extrication drill. The scenario for the drill was a 2 vehicle MVA, one rolled over on top of the other with multiple patients trapped with severe injuries including amputation. Before working to extricate the patients, firefighters had to first stabilize both vehicles using cribbing, struts, and chain sling rigged to a winch. After initial access was gained, EMS was able to evaluate the trapped patients, and our members completed multiple extrications using various tools to create enough space for patient removal. The drill was a great opportunity for both agencies to hone our skills and learn more about each other’s needs at these types of incidents.

Patient Packaging Drill

Last evening, members of Rescue Company 1 conducted training on patient packaging and evacuation techniques from remote locations. Firefighters initially trained on proper patient packaging methods utilizing a stokes basket with manual carrying techniques. The evolution then progressed to implementing our rough terrain transporter system, which enables crews to safely move injured patients over challenging terrain or extended distances. As the Township’s Rescue Company, we regularly respond to incidents in wooded areas that require these specialized skills. Consistent training with this equipment ensures our members remain proficient when called to locate and extract patients from remote locations.

This week, the membership of Fire Rescue Company 1 would like to recognize and thank the dedicated dispatchers of Mahwah PD during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. These professionals serve as our first responders gathering critical information, coordinating resources, and ensuring our crews arrive safely where needed. Whether it’s 3pm or 3am, these telecommunicators remain the calm voice guiding both citizens and first responders through emergencies. Their professionalism and dedication are vital components of our emergency response system and we are grateful for their continued service to our community.

MVA Rollover

This morning at approximately 4:30am Company 1 was added to an assignment on Route 17 North for an MVA rollover with a vehicle on fire. Upon arrival, it was determined that all occupants were out of the vehicles and were tended to by Mahwah EMS. Rescue Engine 117 and Engine 115 responded and operated for about 1 hour securing the vehicles and mitigating the fluid spill.

Cub Scout Visit

Yesterday evening, Fire Rescue Company 1 had the privilege of hosting Cub Scout Troop 258 at our firehouse for a tour and demonstration. The scouts were given an overview of our apparatus and specialized rescue equipment followed by a vehicle extrication demonstration. Our firefighters showcased various techniques and tools used during these technical rescues. These educational opportunities allow us to connect with our community’s youth while providing valuable fire safety information. Co.1 would like to thank Troop 258 for their interest in the fire service and paying us a visit.

New Hurst Extrication Tools

Last week, Rescue Company 1 took delivery of our new Hurst extrication tools, also known as the Jaws of Life. After researching and developing a list of tools needed, these tools along with many others were purchased in conjunction with our new Heavy Rescue Truck, which will be delivered later this year. Company 1 would like to thank the Township Council for realizing the importance and granting the funds to make this purchase, which will provide us with the best equipment available to serve our residents. Dumpster Fire

At around 10:30 last night, the Mahwah Fire was dispatched to the Fardale section of town for a dumpster fire that was in close proximity to a home. Rescue Engine 117, Rescue 1, and Engine 115 all responded. Engine 117 arrived behind Co.4 units who had a majority of the fire knocked down. Crews washed down and overhauled the dumpster before returning to quarters.

Tuesday proved to be an exceptionally busy day for the volunteer firefighters of Company 1. At approximately 1:30pm, Companies 1 and 2 responded to a local business for a reported fluid spill. Engine 117’s crew was first arriving, securing the affected area and establishing a perimeter while awaiting Bergen County Hazmat. While clearing from that incident, Companies 1, 2, and 3 were dispatched to a residence for a reported kitchen fire. Upon arrival, crews from Engine 117, Rescue 1, and Engine 320 found a malfunctioning stove with no active fire or smoke conditions. Firefighters secured the appliance before returning to quarters. Later that evening, units were dispatched to Ramapo College for a reported smoke condition. Engine 117’s crew located the source, a pot left unattended on a stove. After securing the appliance, firefighters vented the smoke with assistance from Rescue 1 before returning to quarters. Job well done by all

287 Truck Fire

Earlier this morning, Co.1 was requested for an Engine and manpower to back up fire companies 2 and 4 for a working tractor trailer fire on Route 287 Northbound. Rescue Engine 117 responded with a full crew and assisted with water supply, extinguishment, and overhaul. Units operated for just over an hour before returning to quarters.
