Busy Evening For Mahwah Fire

Mahwah Fire had a busy evening tonight which started with an MVA on Route 17. Mahwah Fire responded to Route 17 North for an MVA with an injured driver and after arriving on scene Firefighters found that the car had gone into a ravine next to a small creek. Firefighters worked quickly to secure the vehicle and remove the driver, who was transported to an area hospital. While this was going on additional Firefighters responded to Ramapo Valley Road for a smoke condition inside of the home. After arriving on scene Firefighters were able to secure the issue causing the smoke. Not long after returning from those calls Mahwah Fire responded to Winding Trail for the second smoke condition. After arriving, Firefighters were able to find the cause and began to return to quarters.

FBI K-9 Drill At Liberty State Park

Yesterday Company 1’s dive team along with the North Jersey Dive Task Force the spent the day at Liberty State Park providing dive support to the FBI and other any many other agencies during their K9 Maritime Drill. This drill was intended to get the dogs acclimated to moving boats while performing their duties. This was a large drill that included the FBI, Mahwah Fire, the North Jersey Dive Task Force, Lyndhurst Dive Team, Wyckoff Fire Dept, Parsippany Rescue and recovery, Jersey City FD, the Coast Guard, and many other agencies spread out across Liberty State Park, the Statue of Liberty and Randal’s Island.

September 11th

18 years later our actions as firefighters serve as a reminder that in the darkest days there is good in the world. As posted last week the Mahwah FD Exempt Association continues to put out the flags to honor the sacrifices made. Tomorrow we remember all those lost in the attack of September 11, 2001 at 7pm. 287 South Truck Fire

At around 3:30 this morning Mahwah Fire responded to Route 287 South for a truck fire. As firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze and overhaul the affected contents we were joined by our colleagues at Mahwah EMS, firefighters from Allendale, Ramsey, and Hillburn who assisted at the scene and stood by at our firehouses during the call.

At tonight’s drill Company 1 Firefighters and Mahwah EMS had a joint extrication drill. Drill Night: Cribbing Jenga

At this week’s drill Company 1 firefighters worked with the Hurst Tools or more commonly known as the Jaws of Life. Firefighters used the tools to remove pieces of cribbing and place them on top of the tower. This drill allows the firefighters to practice their tool handling and maneuvering skills. Drill Night: Flashover

Tonight Mahwah Firefighters went to the Bergen Fire Academy for flashover training. Simply put a flashover is when the gases inside of burning room suddenly ignite. This is an extremely dangerous situation for firefighters to be in and may only leave them with a few seconds to get out of the area. This can be simulated at the academy and allows firefighters to learn the signs that one is imminent and what to do in that situation. The video below shows some of the training that took place tonight.
