This month Company 1’s Dive Team along with teams from Lyndhurst, Oradell, Wallington and the Bergen County Sheriff officially formed the Bergen County Regional SCUBA Task Force. The task force will respond to calls for evidence recovery, search and rescue/recovery, ice rescue, and also boat operation. It can be argued that the event that changed Mahwah from sleepy agricultural hamlet to what it is today was the opening of the Ford Plant. Many of our firefighters worked for Ford or the related industries. Some were even part of the fire brigade located on site.

This January Company 1 responded to 33 calls for service. This month there were 3 dispatched structure fires, 2 elevator rescues, 3 extrications, 13 fire alarms, 6 gas leaks, 1 oil spill, 1 oven fire, 1 stand-by, 2 working fires, and 1 vehicle fire. As always, the volunteer members of Company 1 are ready to respond 24 hours a day 7 days week.

At around 5:30 yesterday evening fire companies 1, 2, 3, 4, Mahwah EMS and mutual aid from around the area responded to Marion Drive for a structure fire. Crews worked for several hours to extinguish the fire before returning to quarters.

These calls were 7 boiler issues, 5 brush fires, 4 burning smells, 1 chimney fire, 15 carbon monoxide alarms, 17 dispatched structure fires, 2 dryer fires, 1 dumpster fire, 12 EMS assists, 3 electrical issues, 9 elevator rescues, 15 extrications, 146 fire alarms, 2 fuel spills, 23 gas leaks, 2 grill fires, 1 HAZMAT call, 3 mutual aid requests for a fire, 1 mutual aid request for the fan boat, 1 mutual aid request for the dive team, 1 mutual aid request for a fast team, 3 oven fires, 1 rubbish fire, 9 smoke conditions, 5 calls for sparking wires, 6 smells of smoke, 2 stand-by’s, 1 technical rescue, 1 wash-down, 1 water rescue, 2 working fires, and 2 vehicle fires.
