The Mahwah Fire Department turns 105 this year. An even bigger Anniversary is the 75th Anniversary of the Township of Mahwah!
The creation of the MFD had a significant impact in Northwest Bergen County. It began the formation of what would become the township. In the 1920’s the fire department built the first municipal building at 100 Miller Rd (today still in use as Mahwah Fire Co. 1). The ground floor was the fire department. The top floor the courtroom. The basement the police department and jail.
With government infrastructure in place it took 30 years after the MFD but The Township of Ho Ho Kus became incorporated as the Township of Mahwah through an act of the NJ State Legislature after a vote in the municipal election on November 7, 1944. Attached is a copy of the original incorporation document certifying the vote.
Stay tuned for special events this year celebrating 75 years as a unified township. — in Mahwah, New Jersey.
