On this day 103 years ago Millard Cooper, Warren Ackerman, Mathias Carey, Raymond Dator, W. Dederick, Ray Edwards and many others, formed the first formal fire department in what was then Ho-Ho-Kus Township. Our first firehouse was located inside of Millard Cooper’s barn on Hillside Avenue, just 1 block from where our house currently sits. Cooper was also elected our first Fire Chief.
Since then Fire Company 1, along with the other 4 fire companies have remained 100% volunteer and responded to thousands of call for service and hundreds of fires. These calls encompass everything from fire alarms, car crashes, rescues of all sorts, and also fires both in town and also our neighboring towns. As of this posting company 1 has responded to 289 calls for service just this year.
As we look back on our last 103 years we remember the calls that stand out to us and also our members who are unfortunately no longer with us. But we are also looking forward our next 103 years where our members will continue to volunteer their time to serve our community during its times of need.
