Residing at 100 Miller Rd., Mahwah, NJ, Co No. 1 has proudly served the residents of Mahwah NJ with professionalism, dedication and above all, a domineering volunteer spirit since 1914.

Today, Co No. 1, has 6 pieces of emergency apparatus and the members of Company No. 1 specialize in the area of technical rescue which includes calls such as building and trench collapse, elevator rescues,  motor vehicle accidents, and confined space emergencies. Co No. 1 allows provides water rescue capabilities in the form of our Swift Water and Dive Rescue teams. Co No. 1’s Dive Rescue team is a leading dive team in northern NJ and is a member of the NJ Regional SCUBA Task Force.

We currently house two class A pumpers, two heavy rescue trucks, a rescue support pickup, collapse and confined space trailers and three boats, to include the only fanboat in the tri-state area.

Structure Fire

This evening members from Fire Companies 1, 2, 3, and 4 responded to a possible structure fire on Franklin Turnpike after receiving multiple calls of smoke coming from an apartment. After arriving and finding smoke was coming out of the apartment firefighters entered and immediately found the cause, an unattended pan on the stove. Firefighters removed the pan and began to vent the apartment to remove the smoke, shortly after all crew had begun to return to quarters.

Dive Team Recovers Evidence

Earlier this week Rescue 1’s Dive Team responded to the Ramapo River to assist the Mahwah Police with recovering evidence. After an hour of searching the river bottom, divers had recovered items that are believed to be evidence in an ongoing investigation

Mahwah Fire Department History: Department Founders

Who founded our department and why? In 1914, spurred by two major disasters, a 7-store business district blaze and the Erie Railroad station fire, township residents decided to form their own formal fire department. Instigators in this movement were Warren Ackerman, Walter Finch, and Millard Cooper (pictured) who met formally with 10 other men December 28th 1914. Some semblance of a local organization was in in existence about 1910 but it was not until May, 1 1915 that 25 men chartered the first official department. Three years later the department came under township jurisdiction. -***information obtained the 50th Anniversary program of the MFD

Freon Leak

At around 5am this morning Fire Companies 1, 2, and 3 responded to Franklin Turnpike for a freon leak. Once on scene Fire crews found that a line had ruptured and was leaking freon. After working quickly to secure the leak crews vented affected area and monitored the situation. After approximately 2 hours fire crews had started returning to quarters. 

Motor Vehicle Accident With An Entrapped Driver

At around 12:45 this morning Rescue 1 and Fire Company 2 responded to North Central Avenue for a single car accident with an entrapped driver. Once on scene Rescue 1 found that the vehicle had struck a utility pole and worked quickly to extricate the driver. After about 30 minutes all units had returned to quarters.
